It began with an idea, as all things do. An idea for a garden...
A garden, for me, represents a beautiful, whole, and complete expression of creativity. A garden is not the wilds of nature where we might struggle for survival, but a space where we collaborate with nature and, in return, receive everything we need.
There are, of course, infinite layers to a garden, from the subtle exchange of gases as we and the plants give breath to each other, to the depths of the earth, where the minerals and microorganisms rub shoulders with the earthworms.
In its essence, though the garden is boundaried, it is contained so we can begin to understand it as a universe within itself and, in turn, possibly learn something of our place within it. This is why I use the metaphor of the garden so often in my work here.
It is an attempt to point myself and others towards some kind of felt sense of our fundamental place in relation to the world. Personally, I find this deeply healing in a world that can seem, at times, chaotic and overwhelming to navigate.
So, one day I was dreaming in my garden, as I am prone to do, when a thought came to me. A new thought, which is always a refreshing break from the recycled brain chatter I hear most of the time. That thought was 'What would my digital garden look like?'
I'm not talking about landscape garden design here or painting with an iPad, the thought was more about how I might create the essence of what I enjoy creating here (in my real garden) in a digital realm...?
I love working in the garden, and what makes the work so satisfying is that every element of work contributes to a bigger goal and purpose, and time is never wasted. Even time spent dreaming or listening to the birds.
The garden is a productive and nourishing space that facilitates the emergence of beauty and community - it is a space to invite people into. A space to offer the literal and metaphorical fruits of my labour. If a real garden works well, it has the potential to support all our human needs. A garden can feed both the body and soul.
I began to imagine my garden as different areas of potential digital outputs and offers, maybe a podcast over where the shelter is, an online programme could be like the compost heap where all the real magic happens, new growth is generated as old ideas get broken down, and new possibilities and a sense of creative freedom emerge.
The flowerbeds emerge as a backdrop of colours and branding, giving the feel of somewhere safe and beautiful to explore, and the boundary fence is the human exploration of creativity.
At any point, new offerings can be planted, seeds of ideas sown and sometimes more substantial structural trees and shrubs of projects and ideas planted. A creative experiment to see which elements take root and grow, and which return to the compost heap to generate new growth in the future. In a garden, nothing is lost.
So, this is a snapshot of what I am creating here, and I welcome you into my garden. I want you to feel at home, look around and explore, see if you can find something that feels nourishing to your spirit. I hope you'll visit often so we can spend time together in this space, drinking tea and pondering the nature of creativity and human experience. You are very welcome here! ๐ธ
