Do you ever feel like outdated thoughts about yourself are holding you back from fully expressing your creativity? Maybe you doubt your abilities, fear failure, or feel that you’re just not the ‘creative type.’ These thoughts and beliefs can quietly shape our actions and keep us from stepping into our full potential. The truth is, creativity isn’t reserved for a select few, it’s within all of us. The key to unlocking it often lies in overcoming the limiting beliefs that stand in our way.
Step 1: Identifying Limiting Beliefs
The first step in freeing your creativity is recognising the beliefs that are restricting it. Do you tell yourself that you’re not artistic, not original, or that your ideas aren’t valuable? These thoughts often become self-fulfilling prophecies. Take a moment to write down any beliefs you have about your creative abilities. Seeing them in front of you can help you begin to question their validity.
Coaching Question: What is one belief you hold about your creativity that might be limiting you?
Step 2: Understanding the Origin of Your Limiting Beliefs
Where did these beliefs come from? Often, they stem from past experiences, perhaps a teacher’s critique, a comparison to someone more skilled, or cultural messages about who gets to be ‘creative.’ Reflect on moments in your life when you started doubting your creative abilities. Understanding the origins of these beliefs can help you see them for what they are - stories, not truths.
Coaching Question: Can you trace back to a specific experience or message that led you to doubt your creativity?
Step 3: Exploring the Function of Your Limiting Belief
It might seem counterintuitive, but limiting beliefs often serve a purpose. They may protect you from the fear of failure, rejection, or discomfort. By believing you’re not creative, you avoid the vulnerability of sharing your work or taking risks. Ask yourself: What does this belief shield you from? Acknowledging this can help you move beyond it.
Coaching Question: How has this belief been keeping you safe, and what might change if you let it go?
Step 4: Reflecting on Behaviour and Impact
Limiting beliefs don’t just stay in our minds; they shape our choices and behaviours. If you believe you’re not creative, you might avoid trying new things, dismiss your own ideas, or downplay your abilities. Think about how this belief has influenced your actions in different areas of your life, your work, hobbies, or even problem-solving skills.
Coaching Question: How has this belief affected your creative expression and opportunities?
Step 5: Reframing Your Belief
Now it’s time to challenge the belief. Is it really true that you’re not creative? Look for evidence that contradicts it. Have you ever come up with a unique idea, solved a problem in an innovative way, or expressed yourself through art, writing, or design? Creativity takes many forms, and you likely engage in it more than you realise.
Coaching Question: What is one piece of evidence that proves you are, in fact, creative?
Step 6: Transforming Your Belief
Replacing a limiting belief with a new, empowering one can shift your mindset. Instead of saying, “I’m not creative,” try affirming, “I am creative in my own unique way.” This new belief should reflect your strengths and potential, reinforcing a more positive and expansive view of yourself.
Coaching Question: What new belief about your creativity will you choose to embrace?
Step 7: Taking Action
The final step is to take a small action that reinforces your new belief. This could be starting a creative project, sharing your work, experimenting with a new medium, or simply giving yourself permission to play and explore without judgment. The more you act in alignment with your new belief, the stronger it will become.
Coaching Question: What is one step you can take today to express your creativity?
